Fascinating, Rich History- Mountain Magnolia Inn is the former residence of Colonel James Henry Rumbough and his wife Carrie. The Rumboughs owned the 350 room Mountain Park Hotel here in Hot Springs which was the site of North Carolina’s first golf course (the Wanna Luna) as well as a popular vacation resort in the 1800’s. Carrie Rumbough was a diminutive yet feisty lady who is said to have burned the French Broad River Bridge down as Union soldiers sought to cross it. On another occasion she rode to Knoxville to negotiate the release of her husband who was in a Union military prison.
This history presents an exceptional opportunity to speak to the interests people have in historic places and people.

Unforgettable Dining
- Martha Beakes, our Executive Chef, is so talented we named the restaurant after her,” Martha’s Unforgettable Dining at Mountain Magnolia” and made her a partner in the business. Using mostly organic foods and serving just 40-50 people per night, we provide an unforgettable dining experience in our 2 indoor dining rooms and 2 outside dining venues. Martha has a “philosophy of food” and several special recipes she can share with readers.

Relaxation and Healing- Occasionally we will encounter a teary eyed guest in the yard and gently ask if everything is ok. More often than not they respond it so quiet and beautiful here I am so joyful I just started crying. Our beautiful location, incredible staff,
Hammocks, massages and soaks in the hot mineral springs relieve people of the stress they have in their busy lives. They relax, let go of stress and get in touch with themselves and their companion. That is the Retreat part of Mountain Magnolia Inn and Retreat.

Painted Lady- Rutland, as their 1868 home was called, was quite an adventurous undertaking after the Civil War. Its dramatic Italianate Victorian architecture features a towering cupola, characteristic angled bay windows and ornate trim. Inside, well preserved ornate plaster features a double door arch and columns, wide cornice and a dramatic ceiling rose. The exterior paint on the home today features 8 different colors ranging from a warm light green to lavender and mustard. Guests and visitors alike love to capture this beauty on camera, on canvas or on video.
